P.3_2. Tea Pavilions

June - August, 2018

Shanghai, China

Providing visitors with a relaxing and meditative experience of tea tasting, the pavilions sit on top of  terraces at an organic tea farm in Fujian Province, China. The two proposals capture the panoramic view of the farm and create an immersive experience of drinking tea both indoors and outdoors during different seasons and climates.
The circular pavilion symbolizes the balance of life and the harmony between nature and human activities. The platform and rill extend into the landscape, inviting visitors to explore the tea farm topography. The Christian cross symbol of the water rill represents the owners’ beliefs and practices.
The split pavilion aims to frame the view from different angles and heights while creating private rooms and outdoor patios for reflective and calming tea tastings. The shape of the pavilion derives from a combination of two crosses.
